The pilot has concluded. The innovation lab experiment of using a blockchain to represent assets has now become an essential element of the financial infrastructure. The growth of tokenized real world assets, from $1.2 billion in January of 2023, to $25.26 billion by early 2026, is remarkable. The US Treasury has the most amount of tokens on-chain ($10 billion), followed by gold and other precious metals at ($5.9 billion), private credit ($4 billion), and tokenized stocks ($963 million; an increase of 2,900% annually). As measured by a monthly growth rate of 20.35%, the number of unique holders participating in this class of financial instruments has grown to 827,951 unique addresses. There is a significant discrepancy between the total combined value of represented RWAs ($378.96 billion) compared with the value of actually issued and distributed RWAs ($25.26 billion). This indicates that there is an existing pipeline to be developed to enable institutional participation in this new asset class; this disparity can be viewed as a substantial opportunity. Several different sources have produced estimates of the total value of the tokenized assets and RWAs will be worth by 2030, including Citi (2 Trillion), McKinsey (2 Trillion), and speculative estimates reaching as high as 9.4 Trillion. There is no longer debate about whether to tokenise assets; the only issue outstanding is how quickly this will happen. <h2>BlackRock's BUIDL and the Institutional Playbook</h2> The USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund (BUIDL) managed by BlackRock is the new industry standard for crypto-native institution cash management thanks to its<a href="https://www.ccn.com/education/crypto/blackrock-buidl-fund-tokenized-money-markets-explained/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> </a><a href="https://www.ccn.com/education/crypto/blackrock-buidl-fund-tokenized-money-markets-explained/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">$2.5 to $2.9 billion in assets</a> under management and also its integration as margin collateral on major derivatives platforms that will allow for the distribution of more than<a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/blackrock-buidl-hits-100m-dividends-060747513.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> </a><a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/blackrock-buidl-hits-100m-dividends-060747513.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">$100 million in total dividends</a> by December 2025 to be paid to holders of the digital dollar. BUIDL has effectively turned tokenized T-bills into a composable DeFi primitive. To this end, Bank of New York Mellon has become a custodian and provided institutional-grade compliance to enable the use of blockchain settlement rails for the fund while<a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/blackrock-usd-institutional-digital-liquidity-fund-buidl-tokenized-by-securitize-surpasses-1b-in-aum-302401480.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> </a><a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/blackrock-usd-institutional-digital-liquidity-fund-buidl-tokenized-by-securitize-surpasses-1b-in-aum-302401480.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Securitize has taken care</a> of the fund's tokenization and transfer agency duties. Circle's USYC fund also briefly had more total value locked (TVL) than the BUIDL in January 2026, indicating that competition is enhancing rather than consolidating. While Franklin Templeton's BENJI token has around $892 million of AUMM, there is much more to the larger institutional space than one product. Ondo Finance has created a retail-to-institutional bridge by entering into Solana, Aptos, and Sui and introducing about<a href="https://www.kucoin.com/news/flash/ondo-finance-adds-98-new-tokenized-stocks-etfs-total-exceeds-200" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> </a>98 tokenized equities and ETFs, bringing their total portfolio to<a href="https://www.coindesk.com/business/2026/01/21/ondo-finance-brings-200-tokenized-u-s-stocks-and-etfs-to-solana" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> </a><a href="https://www.coindesk.com/business/2026/01/21/ondo-finance-brings-200-tokenized-u-s-stocks-and-etfs-to-solana" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">200</a>. Goldman Sachs and BNP Paribas issued their first tokenized bonds and gold through the Canton Network, which included over 30 institutions. JPMorgan has launched fully functioning tokenized products beyond pilot projects. The trend is clear: financial institutions that are known for traditional models are also creating digital divisions to monitor the transition from centralized ledgers to decentralized networks rather than simply exploring new ideas. <h2>Regulatory Tailwinds: CLARITY, GENIUS, and MiCA</h2> The CLARITY Act, which defines cryptographic tokens (tokens used for transactions on a blockchain) into two distinct classes (network tokens and payment tokens), and divides regulatory authority between two regulators (the CFTC and SEC), is one of the first US laws to provide the clearest guidance on how tokenized assets will be treated under US law. The passage of the CLARITY Act by Congress with a<a href="https://www.paulhastings.com/insights/crypto-policy-tracker/update-on-crypto-market-structure-legislation-senate-banking-draft-and-clarity-act" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> </a><a href="https://www.paulhastings.com/insights/crypto-policy-tracker/update-on-crypto-market-structure-legislation-senate-banking-draft-and-clarity-act" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">house vote of 294–134</a>, and the law's consideration in the Senate makes this law even more attractive for companies that want to issue security tokens. For issuers of RWA, this clarity is critical since it removes the confusion around how tokens will be classified and will encourage institutional investors to engage with them. Network tokens are the "savings account" of the crypto economy and stablecoins are the "checkbook". The GENIUS Act was<a href="https://www.mayerbrown.com/en/insights/publications/2025/07/genius-act-signed-into-law-us-enacts-federal-stablecoin-legislation" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> </a><a href="https://www.mayerbrown.com/en/insights/publications/2025/07/genius-act-signed-into-law-us-enacts-federal-stablecoin-legislation" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">signed into law in July 2025</a> and created a bifurcated market for stablecoins and payment tokens, with payment tokens (i.e. USDC and USDT) and yield-bearing investment tokens (i.e. BUIDL, USDY, BENJI) created to operate in a single market under a federal stablecoin framework. While MiCA went into effect in December 2024, with one of its key functions being the creation of a unified framework for requirements for supply of crypto assets, protection of investors, and cross-border compliance. The legal barriers that have historically kept institutions from making their capital available to invest in tokenized assets will be removed as there is growing regulatory convergence between the regulatory systems of the US and EU for the treatment of crypto assets. Institutions will also have a clear path for tokenizing their equity products as they will have more clarity on how these products are classified, what custodial requirements exist for holding them, and how they are treated for compliance purposes. The effects of the regulatory clarity are already being felt, as evidenced by the<a href="https://blockonomi.com/cryptos-rwa-revolution-25b-market-37-growth-institutional-flows/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> </a><a href="https://blockonomi.com/cryptos-rwa-revolution-25b-market-37-growth-institutional-flows/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">2,900% year-over-year increase</a> ($963 million) in the dollar value of tokenized stocks. <h2>Tokenized Gold and Defensive Assets: Volatility's Hedge</h2> During the crypto market downturn of February 2026, tokenized gold proved its concept. The price of an ounce of gold was down to about 19 BTC by the end of February, as Bitcoin fell 6.5% against gold (compared to YTD), while gold rose over 55% from the prior year. The on-chain value of tokenized gold and precious metals increased 68% to $5.9 billion vs 2024, driven mainly by<a href="https://bingx.com/en/news/post/tokenized-gold-market-cap-tops-billion-on-february-led-by-xaut-and-paxg" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> </a><a href="https://gadgetkade.ir/price/pax-gold" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Pax Gold (PAXG)</a> and <a href="https://gadgetkade.ir/price/tether-gold" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Tether Gold (XAUT)</a>. In addition to traditional physical gold ETFs, tokenized gold has advantages such as fast settlement, the ability to own fractional shares, and 24/7 trading availability. As crypto-related assets were being liquidated during the downturn, commodities offered as tokenized assets have become the top choice for crypto-linked portfolios wanting to establish defensive strategies without leaving the blockchain ecosystem for a traditional trading platform. Tokenized US Treasuries are also an excellent example of a safe-haven asset, yielding between 4-5% annually, with the ability to be used to collateralize margin trading accounts and/or secure loans in the decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem. Overall, the major differences between tokenized real-world assets (RWAs) compared to traditional RWAs are their unique architecture, including: 1) Their dual-use capabilities (yield generation and composability); 2) Their ability to be used as a loan collateral in DeFi; 3) Their trading capabilities on global markets 24/7; 4) The absence of multiple middlemen to facilitate the completion of these functions. This means that it would be very difficult or impossible to fully leverage traditional Treasury holdings in the same manner as you would leverage a tokenized Treasury. <h2>Interoperability and the Path to $10 Trillion</h2> RWA Tokenization has always been hindered by limitations associated with cross-chain fragmentation in 2025. Ethereum comprises roughly ~65% of the value of RWA on-chain, while Solana's footprint for RWA has increased by 18-19% to a new record of $870-875 million as of December 2025. The fragmented liquidity has made it difficult for institutional desks to effectively route flows and has been resolved through<a href="https://blog.chain.link/chainlink-in-2025/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> </a><a href="https://blog.chain.link/chainlink-in-2025/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Chainlink's CCIP</a> (Cross Chain Interoperability Protocol) as well as LayerZero's omnichain messaging now allowing for standardised cross-chain transfers of tokenised assets. The multi-institutional pilot project of the Canton Network demonstrates that wholesale financial assets could be settled over blockchain networks with privacy protections in place. In terms of strictly quantitative forecasts, Citi offers projections of<a href="https://coinlaw.io/asset-tokenization-statistics/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> </a><a href="https://coinlaw.io/asset-tokenization-statistics/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">$1.9 trillion in their 2030 estimates</a>, with other optimistic estimates upward of $9.4 trillion - yet all these projections reflect the confidence level of a structural rationale for this market. Globally, there is approximately $130 trillion worth of fixed-income asset markets - so simply from Market Cap alone, the corresponding RWA-on-chain value would exceed the total sum ($378B+) currently represented RWA. Furthermore, the entire crypto-ecosystem has no market cap to speak of compared to any potential Tokenization of between 5-10% of the entire fixed-income asset market. Having established that the on-boarding pipeline between traditional capital (financing) and distributed ledger systems has now been opened - as there are approximately<a href="https://app.rwa.xyz/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> </a>$378.96 billion of represented RWAs awaiting delivery from Companies like BlackRock, JPMorgan Chase, Franklin Templeton) which have "active" operating products being introduced - NOT "test" projects - the conclusion is very clear: the RWA Tokenization movement has already reached production scaling level. Therefore, by 2026 we will have many more examples of what will constitute RWA Tokenization movements than mere speculation regarding RWA Tokenization movements. The question will be not if; instead how quickly will the greater remaining $350B+ of represented assets migrate from current use of traditional ledgers to new distributed ledger based systems?
