Vitalik Buterin, the co-creator of Ethereum, has expressed his thoughts regarding simplifying node operation on the Ethereum blockchain. Vitalik's main area of concern was whether there was a need for an execution layer client (node) and consensus layer (node) to be separate entities. In addition, these daemons must be able to communicate with each other and do so through the Engine API. The above constructs a considerable amount of complexity for these node operators with many problems occurring through the installation/configuration/update processes that will happen separately with each client's synchronization occurring independently and due to that there will also be more delays with regard to troubleshooting problems between each of the daemons needing to be run by each of the node operators.For many users, this friction is too much. It discourages running personal nodes or solo staking.<h2>Why Self-Sovereign Nodes Is Needed</h2>Eth Ethereum is fundamentally decentralized. Users should confirm the chain themselves because they cannot rely on other services. By running your own node, you have both privacy and control. You can stake directly without involving anyone else. Buterin emphasized that, if users want to use Ethereum in a self-sovereign manner, they usually need to run their own personal node. This creates an ideal environment for excellent user experience. Buterin dismissed the excuses about needing powerful computers for operating costs. Even those with powerful hardware will not necessarily be able to devote enough free time to running a node - therefore, running a node should be easy and as much as a part of everyday life.<h2>The Current Post-Merge Setup</h2>Ethereum has a modular architecture since The Merge in September 2022. On the execution layer, there are 4 types of clients: Geth, Erigon, Nethermind, and Besu. They are responsible for executing transactions and running smart contracts. On the consensus layer, there are 5 types of clients: Lighthouse, Prysm, Teku, Nimbus, and Lodestar. Their job is to finalise blocks and perform validator duties.During development, the split was beneficial. Client diversity was maintained at a high level. A more diverse ecosystem helps mitigate risk from individual application defects. However, several disadvantages are evident in execution. It often takes days to synchronize one's devices. Updates must be handled separately on both devices. Networking problems occur with greater frequency than expected. As a result, many people use either staking pools or hosted services. These two use cases create centralisation of power and an increased reliance on trust assumptions.<h2>Buterin’s Practical Suggestions</h2>Buterin provides a gradual process to reconfigure the service instead of an immediate change or reconfiguration. For instance, short-term solutions consist of providing users with better tools. One suggestion includes the use of "standardized wrappers", which could utilize Docker to bundle clients together. An ideal wrapper would perform automatic setup (e.g. ports, JWT token, communication), thereby eliminating the need for users to do so manually. As with their clients, users can maintain their diverse client preferences through the use of the standardized wrappers.Existing solutions have received acclaim by Buterin; Nimbus has already completed unifying their entire stack into one unified node, including both layers being processed with a single data folder. This demonstrates that simplification is achievable today and serves as an example to further inspire collaborative efforts towards other tools that might reduce complexity in the future. In the long term and as Lean Ethereum concepts progress, he suggests a full re-evaluation with respect to completely integrating all parts into one cohesive application. The goal of Lean Consensus is to minimize the amount of resources that are utilized through the use of partially stateless clients, which was first offered by Buterin in May of 2025. If combined with leaner execution, we could potentially have only one binary node that runs on very little hardware and has limited configuration requirements.<h2>Potential Benefits</h2>The operation of nodes can be made easier, resulting in more people operating full nodes, more solo validators, a greater diversity of nodes within the network, and a higher degree of censorship resistance. As users will no longer need to rely on external RPCs, their privacy level will increase. For example, a regular user living in Lagos would be able to participate in the network much easier than they would be able to if there were high barriers to entry.<h2>Challenges to Consider</h2>Risk is inherent in the process of Unification; hence having client diversity has helped Ethereum protect itself. A single codebase is likely to lead to vulnerabilities being exploited much quicker so additional precautions need to be implemented. Migration paths should not affect existing validators and will require a lot of time and effort for testing. The community response to this has been mixed; while there are many who like the move towards simplicity, there are others expressing their concern about security issues.<h2>Broader Context in 2026</h2>The ongoing evolution of Ethereum is what this whole conversation has focused on. The upgrades are more geared towards scaling, improving state efficiency, and providing proof of technology. Several projects such as Glamsterdam are working on things like increasing gas limits. Additionally, there are Binary State Trees and RISC-V proposals to help improve how execution occurs within Ethereum. Simplifying nodes helps to further support these upgrades and ensure that the core layer remains easily accessible.The goal of Ethereum should be to support users. Buterin's post emphasizes this as it relates to making Ethereum more accessible to users by simplifying the platform's functionality so that it continues to exist as a users' platform versus just being a platform for corporations. To make it easier for users to run nodes (either by leveraging existing technologies or the architectural advancements planned for the future), there is a need for the continued promotion of running a node as something that users do as part of the daily routine. Just this one change has the potential to greatly enhance the development of user authority.
