BRIDGED BUSD (BUSD) FAQ
What is BUSD?
BUSD, or Binance USD, is a stablecoin designed to maintain a 1:1 peg with the U.S. dollar. Issued by Paxos in collaboration with Binance and approved by the New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS), its aim was to provide a stable digital asset for crypto transactions.
What is "Bridged BUSD" and how does it differ from native BUSD?
"Bridged BUSD" refers to a wrapped version of the native BUSD token. Native BUSD was originally issued by Paxos on the Ethereum blockchain. To extend BUSD's utility to other blockchains like BNB Chain, Avalanche, or Polygon, a wrapped version, known as Binance-Peg BUSD, was introduced. This wrapped token is designed to track the value of the original ERC-20 BUSD at a 1:1 ratio, with the native BUSD locked in reserve.
How does Bridged BUSD operate across various blockchains?
When BUSD is moved to another blockchain via a bridge, an equivalent quantity of native BUSD on Ethereum is temporarily locked. In return, a corresponding amount of Binance-Peg BUSD is then created on the destination blockchain, such as BNB Chain, Avalanche, or Polygon. This mechanism ensures users can use BUSD within these new ecosystems, with its value continuously backed by the native BUSD held in reserve.
What are the primary risks associated with BUSD?
Key risks include the possibility of "de-pegging" if the stablecoin loses its 1:1 value against the U.S. dollar due to extreme market conditions or unforeseen events. Concerns also involve potential regulatory changes impacting its operations, counterparty risk associated with Paxos holding the reserves, and security threats like hacks. Paxos also retains the ability to pause transfers or token creation/destruction, introducing a centralization risk.
Is Bridged BUSD still a recommended stable asset for new Web3 projects?
Historically, BUSD was a favored stable asset for Web3 projects due to its regulatory compliance and audit history. However, current circumstances, specifically Paxos halting the minting of new BUSD tokens, indicate that its long-term viability and liquidity are uncertain. Projects should critically assess these factors and consider alternative regulated stablecoin options for their future needs.
Where can users acquire or divest Bridged BUSD?
Bridged BUSD is available for trading on various decentralized exchanges (DEXs). Additionally, centralized exchanges, including LBank, offer platforms where users can buy and sell BUSD. This often involves exchanging it for other stablecoins or cryptocurrencies, facilitating its acquisition or divestment within the crypto ecosystem.
