A RollApp is an application-specific Layer-2 blockchain (rollup) built using the Dymension RollApp Development Kit (RDK). Unlike traditional applications that share a common blockchain, each RollApp operates on its own dedicated blockchain. This design allows RollApps to outsource their security and settlement processes directly to the Dymension Hub, ensuring robust infrastructure without competing for network resources, which enhances performance and reduces transaction costs for users.

Dymension, specifically referring to the Dymension Hub, functions as a Layer 1 blockchain. It is built using the Cosmos SDK and provides the foundational security and settlement layer. The networks constructed on top of the Dymension Hub, known as RollApps, are considered Layer 2 blockchains, benefiting from the Hub's security while offering application-specific environments.

The DYM token serves several key functions within the Dymension ecosystem. It is primarily used for staking, which is crucial for securing the Dymension Hub and its operations. DYM holders can also participate in governance, voting on significant protocol upgrades and the allocation of community pool funds. Additionally, DYM is utilized to pay for transaction 'gas' fees on the Hub. Furthermore, it acts as the primary pairing asset for all RollApp tokens within Dymension's embedded Automated Market Maker (AMM), facilitating liquidity and trade.

To qualify for Dymension ecosystem airdrops, also known as "Rolldrops," the primary methods involve staking DYM tokens and providing liquidity within the Dymension Automated Market Maker (AMM). Many new RollApps frequently distribute their own tokens to active DYM stakers. While no official minimum is set, the community generally advises staking at least 50 to 100 DYM to improve eligibility and bypass common "sybil" filters used by projects. When choosing a validator for staking, it's widely recommended to select community-driven validators or those outside the top ranking, and specifically avoid using validators associated with centralized exchanges, as they are often excluded from airdrop distributions.

Dymension is designed to be compatible with both EVM (Ethereum-style) and Cosmos-style wallet address formats. Therefore, when you use a wallet like Metamask, your DYM address will typically begin with '0x...', which is the standard Ethereum Virtual Machine format. In contrast, wallets such as Keplr or Leap, which are native to the Cosmos ecosystem, will display your DYM address starting with 'dym...'. This difference in formatting can sometimes cause confusion when users are bridging funds or checking balances across these distinct wallet environments. The official Dymension Portal generally provides tools to link or reconcile these different address formats.

Staking DYM tokens involves an unbonding period of 21 days. During this duration, your staked tokens will not earn any further rewards, and you will be unable to move or access them until the unbonding period is complete.
