To enable the use of Ethereum within its ecosystem, the network relies on cross-chain bridging protocols. The token is created through a lock-and-mint process. When a user sends Ethereum from its native network to Aptos, the original asset is locked in a smart contract on the source chain. In exchange, an equivalent amount of Bridged WETH is minted on Aptos. This allows users to move value between different blockchain environments while maintaining exposure to the underlying asset. The most common way this token is generated is through the Aptos Bridge, which is powered by the LayerZero protocol. Other interoperability solutions like Wormhole and Celer also facilitate the creation of bridged Ethereum assets on Aptos. Each bridge provider may have slightly different token contracts, so the specific version of WETH used depends on the bridge selected by the user. In terms of utility, Aptos Bridged WETH serves as a vital component of the network's decentralized finance ecosystem. It is widely used in decentralized exchanges, lending platforms, and liquidity pools. By providing a way to trade and provide liquidity with an Ethereum-pegged asset, it allows the Aptos ecosystem to tap into the broad liquidity of the wider crypto market. Applications such as Liquidswap, PancakeSwap, and SushiSwap utilize this token to offer various trading pairs and yield-generating opportunities for users. A unique technical aspect of using this token on Aptos is the requirement for asset registration. Unlike some other networks, Aptos requires users to manually register or claim a new asset in their wallet before they can receive it. This is a security and account management feature of the Move language. Additionally, some bridging protocols implement a security delay for withdrawals back to the Ethereum network to ensure transaction finality and network stability.
