PAX DOLLAR (USDP) FAQ
What is the difference between PAX and USDP?
USDP is precisely the same token as PAX. In August 2021, Paxos rebranded "Paxos Standard" (PAX) to "Pax Dollar" (USDP) to clarify its identity as a digital dollar. Users don't need to take any action; the ticker symbol simply updated on most trading platforms, and the underlying smart contract remains unchanged.
Is USDP "safer" than other major stablecoins like those from competitors?
Unlike some other major stablecoins, Paxos is a Trust Company regulated by the NYDFS, holding it to bank-like prudential standards. A key safety feature is 'bankruptcy remoteness'; USDP reserves are held in segregated accounts, legally protecting token holders if Paxos faces bankruptcy. This means reserves cannot be used to pay Paxos's creditors. However, while offering strong regulatory assurances, USDP typically has lower trading liquidity compared to some larger stablecoins, which might result in higher transaction slippage on certain trading platforms.
What backs USDP, and are there audits?
USDP is backed 1:1 by U.S. dollars and highly liquid "cash equivalents." These primarily include short-term U.S. Treasury bills and overnight reverse repurchase agreements. Paxos enhances transparency by publishing monthly attestation reports, which are independently verified by third-party accounting firms to confirm that the reserves held match the tokens in circulation on the blockchain.
What is the difference between USDP and PYUSD (PayPal USD)?
PYUSD is a white-label stablecoin issued by Paxos specifically for PayPal, designed for use within the PayPal/Venmo ecosystem with high retail visibility. USDP, conversely, is Paxos’s own branded stablecoin, typically favored in DeFi and by institutional partners who prefer a direct relationship with Paxos. Both operate under similar US regulatory frameworks, but Paxos also recently launched USDG (Global Dollar) for the European market to comply with MiCA regulations.
Why was USDP delisted from some European exchanges?
In 2024 and early 2025, USDP was delisted from some trading platforms in the European Economic Area due to the EU's MiCA (Markets in Crypto-Assets) regulation. MiCA requires stablecoin issuers to hold specific licenses, and USDP, while US-regulated, did not initially fulfill all 'e-money token' requirements for the European market. To address this, Paxos launched USDG (Global Dollar), a new MiCA-compliant stablecoin specifically for Europe, while USDP continues to serve its primary focus in the US and international institutional markets.
Can I redeem USDP directly for cash?
Yes, verified users can directly open an account with Paxos to mint or redeem USDP 1:1 for U.S. dollars. However, small-scale individual users often opt to sell their USDP for USD or another stablecoin on a crypto exchange. This is because direct redemption with Paxos typically involves a minimum transaction amount and requires identity verification (KYC) processes.
