RAI REFLEX INDEX (RAI) FAQ
What is RAI and how does it differ from traditional stablecoins?
RAI is a decentralized, non-pegged stable asset designed for low volatility. Unlike traditional stablecoins that aim for a fixed value like a specific fiat currency, RAI is a managed float asset. It does not target a fixed price but instead moves based on market forces. This approach allows RAI to remain independent from centralized monetary policies, providing a unique alternative for users who want stability without being tied to the fluctuations or risks of traditional fiat-pegged assets.
How does RAI's collateral model enhance its censorship resistance?
A primary distinction of RAI is that it is backed exclusively by Ethereum. Many other decentralized stablecoins incorporate a mix of assets, including centralized stablecoins that are subject to freezing or regulatory intervention. Because RAI uses only decentralized collateral, it is highly censorship-resistant. No centralized authority can freeze the underlying assets, ensuring that the protocol remains autonomous and that users maintain full control over their collateralized positions without interference from external financial intermediaries.
Is RAI a rebase token, and how does it maintain its value?
RAI is not a rebase token. Unlike elastic supply protocols where your wallet balance changes, your RAI balance remains constant. Stability is managed through an algorithmic "Redemption Price" and a "Redemption Rate." The Redemption Price is the target value the protocol believes RAI should have, while the Market Price is what it trades for on exchanges. By adjusting the Redemption Rate, the system creates economic incentives for users to buy or sell, bringing the market price back toward the target.
What are the requirements for minting RAI through a Safe?
Users mint RAI by opening a "Safe," which requires depositing Ethereum as collateral. To ensure the system remains solvent, these Safes must stay over-collateralized. If the value of the deposited Ethereum drops below a specific liquidation ratio relative to the minted debt, the collateral may be auctioned off to repay the system. Additionally, users are responsible for a stability fee, which is essentially the interest paid to the protocol for the privilege of borrowing RAI against their holdings.
What role does the FLX token play in the ecosystem?
FLX is the "Ungovernance Token" that serves as a backstop for the system. If the protocol encounters bad debt that the collateral cannot cover, FLX is minted and sold to restore solvency, acting as a lender of last resort. Furthermore, FLX facilitates the "ungovernance" philosophy, which aims to minimize human intervention over time until the algorithm runs autonomously. Users can also stake FLX to provide a first line of defense for the system in exchange for a portion of the stability fees.
What are the primary risks and security measures associated with RAI?
The main risk to RAI is extreme market volatility. A sudden and massive drop in the price of Ethereum could create bad debt faster than the system can respond. However, the protocol is secured by a sophisticated mathematical engine known as a PID controller, which manages the feedback loop between price and supply. The system has undergone multiple technical audits to ensure the math-heavy architecture is robust, making it one of the most experimental yet scientifically grounded projects in the decentralized finance space.
