SHADE PROTOCOL (SHD) FAQ
What is Shade Protocol?
Shade Protocol is a comprehensive, privacy-preserving DeFi suite built on the Secret Network. It operates as a "super-app" of interconnected applications, including a decentralized exchange (DEX), a stablecoin, and lending services. By leveraging Secret Network’s technology, Shade ensures that user balances and transaction histories remain private by default. However, this privacy is "programmable," meaning users can grant access to their data for auditing purposes using specific "viewing keys."
What is the utility and reward structure of the SHD token?
SHD serves as the governance, treasury, and revenue-share token for the Shade Protocol. Its primary utilities include staking for "Real Yield," where rewards are derived from actual protocol fees—such as DEX swaps and loan interest—rather than token inflation. Additionally, SHD holders can participate in governance to vote on protocol parameters and the composition of the SILK stablecoin basket. The token also functions as collateral, allowing users to mint or borrow other assets within the ecosystem.
What is the SILK stablecoin and how does it differ from traditional stablecoins?
SILK is a privacy-preserving, over-collateralized stablecoin native to Shade Protocol. Unlike traditional stablecoins pegged solely to the US Dollar, SILK is pegged to a "global basket" of currencies and commodities, including the USD, Euro, Gold, and Bitcoin. This unique pegging mechanism is designed to act as a hedge against the inflation of any single national currency while maintaining the core privacy features of the Secret Network.
What are the differences between dSHD and veSHD?
dSHD and veSHD represent different methods of staking SHD. dSHD (Liquid Staked SHD) is a liquid derivative that allows users to earn protocol yield while keeping their assets mobile for use in other DeFi activities, such as providing liquidity on a DEX. veSHD (Vote-Escrowed SHD) is a non-transferable token received when a user "locks" their SHD for a specific duration. veSHD is primarily used to gain greater governance power and to earn a higher share of protocol revenue.
How does Shade Protocol maintain "Programmable Privacy" and security?
Shade Protocol utilizes Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs) provided by the Secret Network. This technology ensures that transaction data remains encrypted even from the validators running the network nodes. To view their own balances or transaction history, users must generate "Viewing Keys." These are one-time transactions that permit a wallet interface to decrypt and display the user's private data, ensuring that financial information remains confidential unless the user chooses to share access.
How can users bridge assets to the protocol and where can they acquire SHD?
Users can acquire SHD through centralized exchanges like LBank or via the native ShadeSwap decentralized exchange. To move assets into the protocol, the Shade Bridge supports IBC transfers from across the Cosmos ecosystem and integrations for assets coming from EVM-compatible chains. When assets are bridged to the Secret Network via Shade, they are automatically converted into "Secret Tokens," which grants them privacy by default.
