SNT is a utility token used for several key functions. It allows users to register unique, human-readable usernames like "stateofus.eth." SNT holders can participate in network governance by voting on upgrades and public funding proposals through the Status DAO. The token also enables access to specific messaging features, such as purchasing "Sticker Packs" or implementing "Tribute to Talk" deposits, which deter spam by requiring SNT from those wishing to message you. Additionally, SNT serves as an incentive for users running "History Nodes" or "Waku Nodes," which are crucial for powering the decentralized messaging infrastructure.

Users can now stake SNT directly within the Status app to earn "Karma," which are non-transferable reputation points, and "Multiplier Points (XP)." There are two primary staking options. "Standard Staking" offers a flexible approach with no lock-up period, allowing rewards to accumulate gradually over time. Alternatively, "Locked Staking" involves committing SNT for a predetermined duration, up to four years, which provides an immediate and significant boost to earned rewards, potentially up to a 9x multiplier, incentivizing long-term commitment to the network.

Status fundamentally differs from centralized messaging platforms like Telegram and even privacy-focused ones like Signal by operating on a truly peer-to-peer (P2P) network. Unlike Telegram, which relies on central servers, or Signal, which requires a phone number for registration, Status utilizes the Waku protocol, ensuring messages are routed directly between users without passing through any central server. This architecture, combined with registration via a cryptographic key instead of personal identifiers, makes Status one of the few genuinely anonymous Web3 messengers available, emphasizing user privacy and decentralization.

The Status Network refers to the project's new Ethereum Layer 2 solution, which is being developed on a zkEVM chain like Linea. This Layer 2 is designed to significantly enhance user experience by providing gasless transactions. The innovative mechanism behind this involves leveraging yield generated from bridged assets to cover network fees, thereby removing the burden of transaction costs from end-users. This strategic move aims to make interacting with the Status app and its decentralized features more accessible and affordable for everyone, driving broader adoption.

Based on the most recent project roadmaps and development updates, the Status Layer 2 Testnet was launched in late 2024. Following the successful testing phase and any necessary refinements, the Mainnet launch for the Status Layer 2 is anticipated to occur in early 2025. This timeline positions Status to roll out its gasless transaction capabilities and other Layer 2 benefits to the broader community in the near future, marking a significant milestone in the project's evolution.
