Story Protocol opted to build its own Layer 1 (L1) blockchain to achieve comprehensive innovation across its entire technical stack. This strategic decision allows the project to implement essential and complex features that existing L1s might struggle to accommodate. Such features include on-chain dispute resolution mechanisms and the intricate management of royalty token flows among numerous interconnected intellectual property assets. By developing a purpose-built L1, Story Protocol can optimize its infrastructure specifically for the unique demands of IP management, ensuring scalability, security, and the efficient execution of its core functionalities without the limitations of pre-existing platforms.

It stands as the central element for tokenizing intellectual property (IP) and serves multiple fundamental purposes across the platform. This token is designed to facilitate various operations and interactions within the Story Protocol environment, underpinning the registration, licensing, and monetization of digital assets. As the core utility token, IP is integral to the functioning and economic model of the entire decentralized intellectual property management system, enabling participants to engage with its services and infrastructure.

The 'Story (story)' token (IP) serves several critical functions within the Story Protocol ecosystem. It is utilized to pay transaction fees, or 'gas,' on the Story blockchain, enabling network operations. Furthermore, the IP token is essential for registering and validating intellectual property assets (IPAs) and for licensing these assets to obtain commercial rights. Participants also use IP tokens for active involvement in governance decisions, contributing to the evolution of the Story ecosystem. Staking IP tokens helps secure the network, and it facilitates revenue-sharing and royalty distribution mechanisms for intellectual property owners, ensuring fair compensation.

The 'Story (story)' token (IP) has a total supply capped at 1 billion tokens. At its launch, the initial circulating supply is projected to be approximately 250 million tokens, representing 25% of the total supply. The token distribution strategy is designed to support various components of the ecosystem. Allocations include 38.4% for ecosystem and community development, 10% for initial incentives, 10% for the foundation, 21.6% for early investors, and 20% for core contributors. This structured distribution aims to foster long-term growth, incentivize participation, and ensure the sustainability of the Story Protocol network.
