The Tea Protocol is a decentralized technology framework designed to address the challenges of sustainability and fair compensation within the open-source software ecosystem. Its core mission is to enable open-source developers and maintainers to be rewarded for their contributions. The protocol operates as an incentive layer by integrating with major software package managers such as Homebrew, npm, APT, Crate, PyPI, RubyGems, and pkgx. It is built on blockchain technology, specifically as an Ethereum Layer 2 solution, and is deployed on Base, Coinbase's Layer 2 network. A key technological innovation of the Tea Protocol is its "Proof of Contribution" mechanism. This algorithm quantifies the impact of open-source projects by measuring their real influence within the software ecosystem. Based on this, it assigns a dynamic score called "teaRank" to projects daily, which determines the distribution of rewards. This system aims to ensure that even software components deep within the tech stack receive recognition and compensation. The native token, TEA, fuels activities on the network. It is used for gas fees, governance, and onboarding repositories. Users can stake TEA tokens to support specific open-source projects, contribute to the security of the software supply chain by reviewing packages and reporting vulnerabilities, and participate in the protocol's governance. Max Howell, the creator of Homebrew, a widely used package manager, is the co-founder of the Tea Protocol. The project has conducted incentivized testnets, such as the Assam and Sepolia testnets, to test and refine the protocol's functionality and gather community engagement. These testnets processed a significant number of transactions, making Tea Protocol's testnet one of the most active Ethereum L2 testnets.
