THUNDERHEAD STAKED FLIP (STFLIP) FAQ
What is stFLIP?
stFLIP is a liquid staking token designed for the Chainflip network. It enables FLIP token holders to stake any quantity of their tokens and start earning protocol rewards instantaneously, all without the need to lock up their underlying assets. This flexibility allows users to maintain liquidity while participating in the network's staking ecosystem.
How does stFLIP work?
When FLIP holders stake their tokens, they are issued an equivalent amount of stFLIP in return. This stFLIP automatically grows in quantity within their wallet. This growth reflects the protocol rewards that accrue to the underlying validators, after a service fee is deducted. Staked FLIP is utilized by Thunderhead on validators for the Chainflip network, verifiable through proof of reserves. This liquid token can be freely transferred or integrated into various decentralized finance applications.
What are the expected rewards?
Rewards for stFLIP holders originate from the activities of the underlying validators supporting the Chainflip network. These protocol rewards are dynamic and can fluctuate. stFLIP holders receive these earned rewards, with a 22% service fee being deducted by Thunderhead for the staking service provided.
What are the risks of staking with stFLIP?
Key risks include potential smart contract security vulnerabilities, despite the code being open-sourced, audited, and protected by a bug bounty program. Another significant risk is slashing, which occurs if Chainflip validators go offline or behave maliciously. In such cases, a portion of the staked FLIP can be penalized by the Chainflip blockchain, impacting the underlying assets backing stFLIP.
Does stFLIP offer governance rights?
Yes, stFLIP distinguishes itself as the first Liquid Staking Token that provides governance rights to its holders. This empowers stFLIP holders with the ability to participate in crucial network decisions, including the right to veto proposals. For example, they can object to the onboarding of new operators into the Chainflip network, ensuring a more decentralized and community-driven oversight.
Why does stFLIP sometimes trade at a different price than native FLIP?
stFLIP is backed by staked assets, and the redemption process can take several hours. This inherent illiquidity can occasionally cause stFLIP to trade at a discount compared to native FLIP. Conversely, periods of high demand for stFLIP might lead to it trading at a premium. Market participants, known as arbitrageurs, typically work to restore this price parity. Importantly, stFLIP can always be redeemed for native FLIP on a 1:1 basis through the unstaking mechanism.
